The Queens Platinum Jubilee In Shelley 2022

Shelleys Platinum Picnic in the Park was supercharged with a very generous award of £1,850 from Arts Council England through Huddersfield’s One Community towards Shelley’s celebrations. With the £300 given to us by Kirkburton Parish Council we spent money making this a day to remember for all the family!

Circus Sensible entertained us through the afternoon with stilt walking and juggling and circus skills workshops for the children (and the young at heart), Scissett Youth Band kicked off proceedings at 14.00 followed by Shepley Band, playing songs from every decade of the Queen’s reign. We then enjoyed the wonderful sound of Chicago-born professional guitarist and singer Dom Sky playing a huge range of our favourite hits from Benny and the Jets to American Pie and our new ' National Anthem'  Sweet Caroline. There was snakes & ladders, quoits, cornhole and connect4 as well as a course laid out for the space hoppers. It was a dry day but cold , this didnt deter the Shelley diehards , with over 250 people turning up with all kinds of picnics and bunting , decorating tables, rugs, dogs, children and themselves with all manner of dress to celebrate the Jubilee!!

Millie the Morgan was there for photographs as well as the Queen, some Royal Guards and a Corgi or too, not forgetting  Hubbards Personalised Prints who sold many Jubilee themed gifts, the plant stall made a tidy sum and the Ice Cream Van turned up resulting in lengthy but good natured queues!!

All in all I think Shelley can be very proud of our Jubilee event, everyone enjoyed themselves despite the cold and if you have any photographs to share on here then send them to us at shelleyvillagewebsite@gmail.com
